Welcome!

Some of my earliest memories are of trying to cook only to hurt myself or horrify my family. I wrote my first recipe at 5. Step 1 was Find a dirty bowl. By the time I was in elementary school I was helping my family batch cook and can sauces and jams, and get dinner together some nights. My dad and I have different memories of how helpful I was, but the joy was clearly there, and by high school I was making full meals from scratch for my family.

But I took a different direction, ignoring the signs. I went to college and studied… nutrition… I kept cooking for friends and family, but chose a teaching job, which led to school leadership roles and eventually to ed tech. Its funny looking back and realizing that I was teaching science through cooking projects and taking time from running high schools to volunteer with student cooking groups.

Then in 2019 my wife was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. She needed, and still needs, a different diet. Even with my educational and professional background, it quite literally hit home for me how essential it is to eat good food that has been prepared with care.

This business has grown out of that belief. Maybe you are new parents who need some good meals that are affordable and convenient. Or maybe life has thrown you a curveball like it did my family. Or maybe your kitchen just scares you. Regardless, I would love to partner with you to get you nourished in a way that feels great to you!

 FAQs

  • Each week, I send out an order form with options for the coming week. The menu changes each week, and there are always a few options to choose from for entrees, breakfast, and snacks.

Simply put in your order, let me know about any requests on the form, and I will confirm your order once I've gone over it. All orders need to be in by noon the day before you need it. For Monday orders, it helps to get the order by Saturday.

Delivery is limited to Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, and Albany addresses. Delivery is included for all orders over $60, and is available for a $5 fee for smaller orders. You can also choose to pick up at my house in NOBE.

  • Yes! I am an approved Alameda County MEHKO (permit # PT0329815), and my kitchen and practices have been inspected and approved. Did I put my perfect health inspection report on the fridge like a kid’s report card? Yes. And asked Marie to clap for me.

I also hold both basic and manager food safety certifications, and based on conversations with the health inspector, tend to hold myself to higher standards than necessary. Given Marie’s history and my own severe food allergy, I make sure I am keeping people safe.

  • A variety of grocery stores, farmers markets, and even some well-vetted backyards. I work to live my values and only buy food that is good for the planet and you. Sometimes this means that I'm going organic or only buying a specific brand. Sometimes it is better for the planet to have disease resistant crops with higher yields. Sometimes having an 'organic' label isn't actually changing growing practices, just supporting corporate farmers who can pay for the certification as they drive out independent farmers. The Good Place got a couple of seasons of story out of the impossibility of buying a tomato ethically, but I do my best to stay informed and support people and planet.

I do prioritize humanely raised meat, and beef/pork offerings are only occasional.

  • Are you like my mother-in-law, who I genuinely adore, but can't stand any bitterness? Any dietary restrictions? I'm happy to try to accommodate. My wife and I have our own restrictions, and we eat the meals too. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are almost always available. I can alter methods or sub a veggie to make things more IBS/FODMAP sensitive, and I'm happy to put some lactase in the bag when I make something with dairy, if I can’t make a dairy-free version. Just let me know what you need/want and I will do what I can.

  • For anything that involves the food for a specific week, please put it in your order. There is also a spot on the form for comments or requests or praise outside of that week's meals, or you can email/call/text.

If you have a bigger special request (e.g. you want me to construct a delicious meal and plate it as if you made it to impress your in-laws/date/boss), I'd be happy to work with you. Obviously, extra costs might be factored in, but Block Parties are about coming together and helping each other out!

  • In short, no. My undergraduate degree is in kinesiology (i.e. exercise and nutrition), and I have many thoughts on most popular diets. Most of them are either about eliminating certain foods or strongly emphasizing others, and that core strategy runs counter to the overwhelming scientific evidence that says what we really need are balanced, varied diets with reasonable portions. As I plan the menu from week to week, I work to make sure each meal fits into the bigger picture to create a well balanced, delicious diet.

  • They sure are! Please return them the following week so I can sanitize them and reduce waste and cost. Failure to return them could result in a surcharge for containers.
